FAQ

Child US Passport

My child needs to renew their passport and they are 16yrs old, what should I do?

All passport applicants 16yrs and older are required by the Passport agency to apply for a new adult passport which will be valid for 10 years. Passport applicants under the age of 16yrs would apply with the consent of both parents for a child passport which will be valid for 5 years. Children's passports cannot be renewed as they must be re-issued every 5 years until their 16th birthday.

My former spouse is not involve in my children lives, however I need passports for them. Do they still need to give consent for them to get a passport?

Yes. Under federal laws, both parents are required to give consent for children under the age of 16 yrs when applying for a passport. Only one parent's consent is needed for a passport applicant that is either 16 or 17 years old. US Passport Regulations will allow only one parent to give consent if they have sole custody over the child in question and is able to prove it with legal documentations. In instances where the spouse has passed away a death certificate can be provided to show sole custody in order to apply for the child's passport. A parent that is not present can sign a statement of consent allowing them to give consent without being present in the child's life.

Are both parents required to sign my child's passport book?

Either parent can sign for the child passport book as their legal guardian due to the child being under age, and considered a minor. In the signature section of the passport book, the mother or father will print the child's name and sign their own name next to it. In parenthesis, the parent will indicate who signed, by writing (mother) or (father) in order to show correct authorities who signed the passport book.

What happens if I owe child support, can I still get a passport?

The passport agency will deny a passport application, if the passport applicant owes child support in the excess of $2,500 or more. Please check with your state law as these vary state to state on amount owed on passport application to be approved and/or issued. If you have every owed more than $2,500 in child support, most states will require your entire balance be paid in full before lifting the alert off of the Passport Agency system that would prohibit you from receiving a US Passport.

If I have full custody of my kids, can I get passport for them?

The passport agency requires parents and legal guardians with full custodian rights to show proof and consent for a child passport application.
