Do I need a passport to go to Mexico and Canada?

Do I need a passport if I want to travel to another state?

I am in the military, do I still have to pay the government fee?

All military personnel and government employed workers are required to pay the government fee. Please note that there are no discounts or vouchers on government fees for a tourist passport book. Can I travel on vacation with my military passport, or do I have to apply for a new tourist passport?

All military personnel are required to apply for a tourist passport to travel for leisure purposes. A military passport is only to be used for military related work ordered. Please note there is a government fee associated with obtaining a tourist passport and there are no discounts or vouchers on government fees for a tourist passport book. Please note that all Military Personal are not to be wearing uniforms when taking their passport photos, per federal regulations.

Can I use my diplomatic passport to travel on vacation?

All US citizens working for various government agencies are require to obtain a tourist passport book to travel for leisure. A diplomatic passport book is only used for government work purposes. Please note that there are no discounts or vouchers on government fees for a tourist passport book.

How much is the government fee for a passport book?

The government fee is paid in a money order or personal check in the amount of $170.00 for expedited services and for a child passport book is $140 for expedited services. The amounts have to be made payable to the "US Department of State". The government fee for a passport card is $30 for an adult and $15 for a child. The Government fee for Adding Passport Pages is: $142 for expedited services.

Did the Passport Agency recently increase the prices on their fees?

Effective on July 13th, 2010, the US Department of State had a price increase on all government fees for passport applications. The reason for the increase in fees is for the increased security of the United States boarders and new systems to detect fraud and identity theft.

Can I wear my glasses when taking my passport photos?

It is recommended that glasses are not worn when taking passport photos, not unless it is prescription glasses and you have to make sure there are no glares in the photos taken. Also please note eye color must be visible in the passport photos. Please note that sun glasses are prohibited.

How often does a passport expire?

An adult passport book is valid for 10 years, while a child passport book is valid for 5 years. Please note that limited passports are only valid for a certain amount of time and cannot be renewed.

Where should I go to have my passport documents executed?

Your local Post office or courthouse will provide a passport acceptance agent who is authorized to execute all passport documents and witness you sign the government application. Please note there is an acceptance agent's fee for your passport documents to be executed (verified, sealed and stamped) before they are send of for processing. All new passport applications are required to visit an acceptance agent.

Can I hand write the application if I am expediting my passport?

Yes, however the Passport Agency recommends that all passport applications be electronically completed in order to reduce application errors. Please note all blank spaces on the passport application must be filled out for fast and correct processing.

Who should apply for a US passport?

Can I get a US passport with my permanent resident card?

Only US citizens can obtain a US passport by submitting an original birth certificate or original naturalization certificate with passport application to show proof of citizenship. All non citizens are advised to contact their countries consulate or embassy to obtain a passport from them.

I need a passport however, I lost my naturalization certificate but I have a copy of it, what do I do?

You will need to contact the Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) to get a replacement. The Passport Agency requires all passport applicants to send in original documents to show proof of citizenship. Please take note that the replacement process of the naturalization certificate could take up to several weeks.

Can I order a passport online and receive it through the mail?

All new passport applications are required to visit an acceptance agent to have themselves and their passport documents verified. Also note that there is an acceptance agent's fee associated for them to properly verify your passport documents.

Will I get my old passport back with my new passport? I want it back for keep sake.

The Passport Agency will return the old, cancelled passport to you although sometimes it is sent separately from your new passport. It is recommended to keep the cancelled passport safe as it is considered proof of U.S. citizenship and identity.

Can I use my Hospital birth certificate to obtain a passport?

No. The Passport Agency requires new passport applicants that were born in the United States, to send in a certified copy of the birth certificate or the original birth certificate issued by the State they were born in. Certified copy of a birth certificate can be obtain from either the state you were born in or from Vitalchek.com, which is fast and easy service that allows you to order your documents online. Can I use the birth certificate that the midwife gave my parents to obtain a passport?

No. The Passport Agency requires new passport applicants that were born in the United States, to send in a certified copy of the birth certificate or the original birth certificate issued by the State they were born in. How much identification do I need, if my driver license is not 6 months old?

US Passport 123 can assist any applicant with providing enough Identification to support their ID when filing for a US Passport. How will I find out if I have been denied a passport?

I need to give the passport agency my new mailing address, is that necessary?

What happens if I owe child support, can I still get a passport?

The passport agency will deny a passport application, if the passport applicant owes child support in the excess of $2,500 or more. If you have every owed more than $2,500 in child support, most states will require your entire balance be paid in full before lifting the alert off of the Passport Agency system that would prohibit you from receiving a US Passport.

Can I get a passport if I owe the IRS money?

The passport agency will deny a passport application, if the passport applicant owes taxes in the excess of $10, 000 or more. However there are some exemptions to this for when a passport applicant owes this amount or more, though they are on a payment plan. Can I get a passport if I am a convicted felon?

The US Department of State has the finally decision on whether a convicted felon can be issued a passport. Please contact the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) to verify what types of felons are barred from been issued a Passport. Also check with your parole officer to see if you can obtain passport after your conviction. Please note that if you are granted a US Passport not all countries will allow convicted felons to visit based on what the conviction was for. Convicted felons should also check the countries they are wishing to visit to make sure there isn't an immigration laws that would prohibit them from entering.

If I was denied a passport before, how long is the waiting period before I can apply for another passport?

Please contact the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) to receive information on a passport application that has been previously denied. Depending on the status on the denial of the passport, the passport agency will have the finally decision whether a passport can be approved and issued by them.

Can I get a passport to visit Israel and then visit Palestine?

Yes. A secondary passport can be issued to a US passport applicant that can be used when visiting two different countries that have political tension between each other. Please note your current passport has to be valid for 6 months or more to apply for a second valid passport. Also note that a second valid passport cannot be renewed, since it's a limited passport valid for only 2 years. I want to visit Cuba, what do I need to do?

Although the government of Cuba permits U.S. citizens to visit, the U.S. itself restricts its citizens from travelling there, except those with a license issued by the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control. Other allowances by the US Department of State can be made on a case by case basis. Please contact the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) for more information on this.

Can I get on a cruise without a passport and just my birth certificate?

Federal law requires all citizens of the United States to have a passport prior to boarding a cruise ship. It also benefits you to have one if you plan to get off of the ship and make landfall as you would not be able to do so if you did not have a passport. Passport card are also allowed when traveling by sea. Children under the age of 16 yrs accompanied by both parents are allowed to board and travel with their birth certificate.

Should I still keep my expired passport or dispose of them?

It is recommended to keep an expired passport, as it can be use for proof of citizenship and identity.

What is an acceptance agent?

Acceptance agents are authorized by the Passport Agency to executed (verify, stamp and seal) documents; and send in passport applications for processing. Please note there is a fee paid directly to them for the services they would render. Please contact the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) at 1-888-443-5847 to make an appointment for passport to be issue and release the same day. Please note depending on high travel volumes and appointment time the process might be lengthy. US Passport 123 has a same day expedited service available for clients living in certain area.

Why can't I just send my new passport application without having to visit an acceptance agent?

What is an E-Passport Book?

Can I use my passport card to fly internationally to other countries?
